Californian White Sage
Californian White Sage
CALIFORNIAN SAGE
Widely used for cleansing and healing purposes, white sage is a plant whose scent is revered for its ability to purify, protect and elevate space. Its Latin name ‘Salvia Apiana’ translates to ‘Healing Plant’
To get started:
• A fireproof vessel for burning sage like a glass bowl. You can have sand or dirt on hand to assist with the extinguishing. Traditionally an abalone shell is used.
• Sage, look for high quality, ethically cultivated sage
• A fire source, such as a long match or candle
• A fanning tool (not completely necessary but could be helpful if you need to cover a large area. Traditionally a feather is used to fan the smoke
How to sage your house to clear negative energy.
1. Gather your tools: First ensure that you've opened a door or window before lighting up. All the negativity and smoke needs to have a pathway to get out.
2. Set your intention and say a mantra: Take a moment before you light the sage to determine your intentions that signify what it is that you're trying to purify or release from your space. Then, decide on a mantra or prayer to repeat while saging that encapsulates this intention.
3. Light up: Hold the sage at a 45-degree angle and light it using a match or candle. Let it burn for about 20 seconds then gently blow out the flame until you see orange embers on one end. The smoke should now billow up. You may need to relight your sage a few times during the process, this is normal
4. Slowly walk around your space: Allow the smoke to waft around. Guide the smoke—and the negative energy—toward the open windows or a door, so it can escape. Remember to have opened a door or window!
5. Be safe! Sage burning 101: Always stay present! Never let the burning sage stay unattended for any reason. If you see little embers fall on the ground, tamp them out immediately. Take care not to inhale too much of the smoke.
6. Extinguish your sage: Press the burning tip firmly into your fireproof vessel, dirt, or sand until the smoke no longer rises. Don't get it wet! Using water to extinguish the hot embers will ruin the tip of the stick and make it harder to light next time.
How to sage yourself.
To sage yourself, you can follow the same steps as above, but the focus will be on your body instead of your space.
The bottom line.
Burning sage is a powerful ritual that Indigenous communities have been using to clear negative energy for thousands of years. It should always be done with intention, reverence and a deep gratitude to those who did it before you.
